About CUEE
At the Forefront of Building the Urban Civilization of the Future
The Department of Civil, Urban and Environmental Engineering at Seoul National University has a long and distinguished history. It was established through the integration of the Department of Civil Engineering at Gyeongseong Technical College, founded in 1916, and the Department of Civil Engineering at Keijo Imperial University, founded in 1941. Today, the Department provides world-class education across eight academic fields: construction management, spatial informatics engineering, transportation engineering, structural and construction engineering, urban design and planning, hydro-engineering, geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering, and environmental engineering. Our graduates have carried a strong sense of social responsibility and played leading roles in developing and advancing Korea’s infrastructure.
The world faces pressing challenges, including climate change, natural and human-made disasters, and the degradation of ecosystems and the environment. At the same time, transformative advances are emerging through convergent technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT). In response to these challenges and changes, the Department is moving beyond the traditional boundaries of civil and environmental engineering to pioneer smart cities, resilient infrastructure, and sustainable environments. Through this work, we are strengthening the foundations of education and research needed to build a better future and pursuing even greater academic achievement and contributions to society.
Guided by our core strategic goal of building the urban civilization of the future, we seek to educate creative leaders in academia and society who will drive the next industrial revolution and shape the future of urban civilization through advanced, interdisciplinary research that opens new horizons in civil and environmental engineering.
To achieve this goal, we offer a multidisciplinary curriculum grounded in civil and environmental engineering that prepares students to address the large-scale, complex challenges of the future. We also conduct innovative research that creates new knowledge, technologies, and platforms and opens new frontiers for the construction industry.
Building on our proud history and tradition while continually evolving, the Department of Civil, Urban and Environmental Engineering at Seoul National University will remain at the forefront of developing the national infrastructure on which civilization depends and building the cities of the future.
Mission Statement
