Professor Jin Hwan Hwang studies fluid phenomena in natural and urban environments through applied fluid physics and hydroinformatics. His main fields are environmental fluid mechanics and hydroinformatics, including flows and contaminant mixing and transport in rivers, lakes, and coastal waters; floods and droughts; weather prediction; and urban airflow.
His work integrates classical fluid mechanics and hydraulics with computational fluid dynamics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data science, together with optical and acoustic experimental and measurement techniques. Research topics include turbulence, shallow-water flow, environmental and eco-fluid mechanics, urban-watershed hydrology, and industrial hydrology. Recent AI-X convergence research addresses urban fluid dynamics and climate challenges, ultra-fast AI simulations for coastal and marine weather, and real-time prediction of currents, waves, and typhoons. He directs the Hydroinformatics Research Center at Seoul National University.
