Professor Dong-Kyu Kim received his B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Urban Engineering and his Ph.D. from the School of Civil, Urban and Geosystem Engineering at Seoul National University. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at SNU's Engineering Research Institute, a visiting research assistant professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, a BK21 research assistant professor, and a research associate professor at SNU's Integrated Research Institute of Construction and Environmental Engineering before joining the faculty in 2014. He has conducted extensive research in transportation planning and operations and mobility-data analytics. He serves professional organizations in Korea and abroad, including the Korean Society of Transportation, the Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems, the Transportation Research Board, and the International Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems Research. He also co-founded Kairos Mobility and serves as its CTO.
His research aims to understand and predict transportation-system conditions and traveler behavior from diverse mobility data, supporting planning and operational decisions for safer and more efficient mobility. His work estimates and generates unobserved or incomplete traffic information and applies it to travel-demand and traffic-flow analysis, prediction, system operation, and optimization. He also studies the impacts of autonomous driving, intelligent transportation systems, and emerging mobility technologies and their deployment in real transportation systems and services.
